Symon is of Ngāi Te Rangi descent. He is a researcher based at Te Kawa a Māui School of Māori Studies at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington.

He works as part of the Novel Tools & Strategies – Invertebrates programme in the BioHeritage Challenge and also co-leads Ngā Pī Ka Rere, an early career network.
